If you enjoyed the dancing in You Got Served and wondered how they did those moves, this 54-minute dance instruction DVD will give you a hint. Choreographer Dave Scott leads a group of dancers in three routines. He breaks down each move slowly, then combines several and speeds them up. Each pattern uses complex footwork, armwork, and body isolations, and unless you're an experienced dancer, you'll need to stop and reverse frequently to practice and memorize. "You've got to listen to the music and hit everything in the pocket," he says, referring to the rhythmic challenges. And if you discover that the routines are too advanced for you, you can enjoy sitting back and watching the process of dancers learning a routine. Additional features include technique instruction (ticking, waving, freezing) and demonstrations of different styles of street dancing. Hip-hop stars Marques Houston, Omari Grandberry, Christopher Jones, Robert James Hoffman III, and a team of athletic dancers help Scott demonstrate routines and techniques. English, Spanish, and Portuguese subtitles are available. –Joan Price

The hip-hop entry in Rhino's Millennium Party compilation series doesn't so much capture the sound of the year 2000 as it does that of 1989. In the wake of "Walk This Way," Top 40 radio realized that its listeners would accept the Fresh Prince's tales of teen mock-woe, Tone Loc's Coasters-derived rockers, and Young MC's, er, tales of teen mock-woe. Up to and including Snoop's "What's My Name?" (the CD's newest cut, from '93), this excellent PG-rated set makes nearly flawless choices. Biggest exception: "Tennessee" by Arrested Development, whose leader Speech's nonstop self-righteous mumbling will drive everyone into the next room. –Rickey Wright

It all started with two turntables and a microphone. Uncover the real history of Hip Hop, with exclusive interviews from the original gangsters, the pioneers of Hip Hop from the South Bronx. DMC (Run DMC), Afrika Bambaataa & the Zulu Nation, Melle Me and the Furious, Busy Bee, Kurtis Blow, DJ Skribble, Crash Crew, Grandmaster Caz, Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock and more, take us back to the dangerous streets in the early 70's and exclusively share their personal stories of the creation of the Hip Hop sound that is now a multi-billion dollar empire.
One of the greatest MCs to ever pick up a microphone, Nas has watched as his beloved hip-hop has gone from its innocent days of B-boy battles and lyrical sport to today's fake-posturing and commercial excesses, and he's got something to say about it. Throughout his storied career, which began with 1994's classic Illmatic and has spanned the last decade with over 12 million albums sold Nas has been more than just the genre's foremost lyricist and thinker. He has become a statesman, some would argue hip-hop's conscience. As evidenced by last year's highly-publicized reconciliation with longtime adversary JAY-Z, and his subsequent signing to Def Jam recordings, Nas has shown that actions speak louder than words: unity is more powerful than divisiveness. The time has come for hip-hop to grow. Now, with the. December 19th release of his long-awaited Def Jam debut- the aptly-titled Hip Hop Is Dead– Nas returns to his role as mentor and teacher, his legendary mic skills as sharp as ever, and takes today's young rappers back to school. The lesson? Hip-Hop- as Nas see's it- is very much alive.
Mega-platinum recording artist Eminem sticks to the basics in this live performance. There's a bit of talking, a few pyrotechnics, but mostly a lot of rapping (and swearing on the explicit version). Spanning his entire career, starting with The Slim Shady EP, the concert film features 20 tracks recorded in Em's Detroit hometown on the second Anger Management Tour (while in support of The Eminem Show). The crew from D-12 joins in on several numbers, like "Fight Music" and "Purple Pills–the audience often gets in on the action, too. Highlights include "Without Me," a solo "Stan," and of course, the Moby impersonator. The only "lowlight" is "Drips" (not one of Eminem’s finest moments as a writer). The concert, which took place on the tour's last night, is accompanied by a raucous behind-the-scenes glimpse at this groundbreaking hip-hop event, featuring G-Unit and Obie Trice. –Kathleen C. Fennessy
The early 90s was a great period in the history of Hip Hop. The vibe was upbeat, yet hardcore, as groups were becoming more innovative and incorporating multiple elements of modern music to form beats completely original and unmatched. The lyrical style
